VAZ Commends Authorities for Rescuing Dogs from Illegal Meat Trade
Lusaka, Zambia • 23rd August 2026
The Veterinary Association of Zambia (VAZ) commends the Zambia Police Service, Government veterinary and livestock officers, animal-welfare organisations and other stakeholders for their swift intervention that led to the rescue of 12 dogs in Kabwe on 21st August 2026, reportedly being transported for the meat trade in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Regrettably, one of the 12 dogs did not survive.
The circumstances surrounding the transportation of the dogs raise serious animal-welfare, animal-health and legal concerns. Zambian law provides for the protection of animals from cruelty and regulates the movement and export of animals, including requirements for appropriate movement and export permits. VAZ therefore calls for the matter to be fully investigated and dealt with in accordance with Zambian law.
Animal welfare is a public responsibility
Animal welfare is closely connected to animal and public health. Poor transportation, overcrowding, inadequate sanitation and uncontrolled animal movement can increase animal-health and public-health risks.
VAZ calls for stronger cooperation between veterinary professionals, law-enforcement agencies, border-control personnel, animal-welfare organisations and communities, particularly at borders, roadblocks, markets and other animal-movement points.
The public is encouraged to report suspected animal cruelty, illegal animal movement or activities that may threaten animal or public health to the appropriate authorities.
VAZ remains committed to protecting animal welfare, preventing disease, supporting responsible animal ownership and promoting the One Health approach, recognising that animal health, human health and public health are interconnected.
