The Veterinary Association of Zambia (VAZ) represented Zambia at the Official Launch of the African Union Framework for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Control 2026–2030 and the Africa CDC Food Safety Strategic Framework 2026–2030, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 23–24 July 2026. The event brought together policymakers, technical experts, and partners from across Africa to strengthen continental efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and improve food safety.
Representing Zambia, Dr. Eugene Bwalya, President of the Veterinary Association of Zambia, delivered a presentation titled "Strengthening Veterinary Leadership in the Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance: The Zambia Experience." His presentation highlighted the vital role of veterinary professionals in promoting antimicrobial stewardship, strengthening disease surveillance, supporting One Health initiatives, and safeguarding public health.
The launch also featured country experiences on AMR from Nigeria and Ethiopia, while Ghana and Egypt shared lessons on strengthening national food safety systems. Interactive panel discussions brought together governments, regional institutions, youth organisations, and development partners to explore practical approaches for tackling AMR, enhancing food safety, and fostering cross-sector collaboration.
On the second day, participants developed implementation roadmaps for the two strategic frameworks through breakout sessions focusing on governance, financing, food safety regulation, surveillance, and sustainable partnerships. These discussions aimed to support Member States in translating the frameworks into effective national action.
Zambia's participation underscores the country's commitment to advancing the One Health approach and strengthening veterinary leadership in addressing antimicrobial resistance and food safety challenges. Through the Veterinary Association of Zambia, the country continues to contribute to continental efforts to protect animal health, public health, and food security.
